Digital Well-Being and Safety for Everyone: How to Gain Control Over Your Digital Life, Block SPAM, Ads, and Push Notifications, Separate Work and Private Life, and Stay Safe From Digital Threats.

On Tuesday, March 4th, at 6pm, just before the standard FixLAB time, a workshop on Digital Well-being and Saftey will be held at MaMa. We are forwarding the invitation from the organizer:

” The workshop is open to everyone and held in English; whether or not you have prior knowledge on the topic, you are very welcome to join. Technical terms will be explained by using everyday words.

Inspired by the unfortunate event in which two of my friends got hacked, I wanted to organize this workshop to prevent this from happening to others like you. The goal is to sit together on the cozy sofas of MaMa and look at practical steps you can take to make your digital life safer and, at the same time, gain control over it.

Digital control means that you are the boss of your device and can decide what happens on it. This means that you decide which apps you have, how they behave, which push notifications, ads, and emails you get, and which data you share with whom.

Digital safety means protecting your personal data, digital identity, and online activities from companies that collect and sell your data, as well as from hackers and government agencies. This involves using good passwords, two-factor authentication, using email aliases (don’t worry—I explain these in the workshop), finding software you trust, and separating your online activities (e.g., by separating your digital work and private life).

Digital control and safety exist in a beautiful symbiosis. The more changes you make for better digital control, the safer it gets—with less spam, apps, accounts, programs, push notifications, and ads. The safer it gets, the more control you have, leading to a healthier and more minimalist digital life.

The digital world can feel overwhelming, boring, abstract and often we are left alone with it. The goal of this workshop is to bring us together so that we can help each other and tackle this as a community.

At 20:00 is the start of the weekly FixLab. At this time we will play an interactive game of “Bingo” where you will have the possibility to immediately implement the learned things on your devices in a fun way.

Bring: your devices, cookies to eat when we delete cookies and skepticism against big tech companies.

If you have the time it would be great if you update your phones and laptops before the workshop and make some space by deleting apps & data you don’t need anymore so we can install other apps.
